Acne is the term for plugged pores that shows up as various types of bumps  (blackheads and whiteheads), pimples, and even deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) that occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and even the upper arms.  Acne affects most teenagers to some extent.  However, the disease is not restricted to any age group; adults in their 20s - even into their 40s - can get acne.  While not a life threatening condition, acne can be upsetting and disfiguring.  When severe, acne can lead to serious and permanent scarring.  Even less severe cases can lead to scarring.

Acne affects young men and young women about equally, but there are differences. Young men are more likely than young women to have more severe, longer lasting forms of acne. Male" hormones, called androgens, cause an increase in sebum production in the pores of the skin, especially on the face, chest and back. Both males and females produce androgens, but males produce higher levels of this "male" hormone. This is the reason that acne tends to be more severe in teenage males than females 

Sebaceous glands are located in the dermis (the middle layer of skin) and secrete oil onto the skin. The layer of skin  produce oil (sebum) which normally travels via hair follicles to the skin surface.. However, skin cells can plug the follicles, blocking the oil coming from the sebaceous glands. When follicles become plugged, skin bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes begin to grow inside the follicles, causing inflammation.

Acne progresses in the following manner. If a pore becomes clogged, closes, and then bulges out, you have a whitehead.   If a pore becomes clogged but stays open, the top may darken and you're left with a blackhead.  Sometimes when the walls of the pore become damaged it allows bacteria and dead skin to work their way under the live skin.  This leaves you with a red, but small infection called a pimple.  Clogged pores that are open deep in the skin cause cysts which are generally infections larger than pimples.
