Sweet potatoes are not members of the potato(Solanaceae) family; rather, they are members of the Convolvulaceae family.  A native of Mexico and Central and South American. 

Contains a fair amount of vitamin A. Sweet Potato comes in different shapes, sizes and colours. The purple, orange/bright yellow-fleshed are popular than the white flesh. Both the young leaves and the tubers can be eaten. 

Health benefits: Rich in vitamin C, calcium, and potassium. 

Cautions: Eating too much sweet potato will cause indigestion and abdominal swelling; the red fleshed varieties of sweet potato are exceptionally sweet and can cause weakness if overeaten.

Uses:
Peeled chunks or diced Sweet Potato are often cooked in coconut milk or used in desserts together with cubes of yam, slices of banana and sago balls. They can also be boiled, steamed or mashed to make a variety of savoury desserts.
